I’m Zena (zeɪnə | زينة), and I’m so glad you’re here! Zen and Zaatar began in 2016 as a passion project, inspired by my love of cooking and my journey into plant-based living. Many of my recipes are influenced by my Syrian-Palestinian heritage, blending vibrant Middle Eastern flavors with a modern, plant-based twist. What started as a hobby has since blossomed into my full-time job, where I get to combine my creativity, love of flavor, and background in health to inspire others every day.
I have a Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences and undergraduate degrees in both psychology and linguistics, which have greatly shaped my approach to food and well-being. I believe in the power of wholesome, plant-based meals that nourish not just the body but also the mind and soul. Through my recipes, I aim to show that vegan food can be full of flavor and accessible to anyone.
The inspiration for this blog's name came from a simple Arabic dip commonly eaten for breakfast or as a snack, "Zeit wa Zaatar," or "olive oil and zaatar." Two deceivingly basic ingredients, joined together when scooped by warm pita bread, create a whimsical, yet lasting impression on one's tastebuds. I strive to recreate this beautiful simplicity through my blog by designing easy-to-follow recipes with simple ingredients, that fuse together to create complex, irresistible flavors.
I have always loved food, but when I went to college, I struggled to find a healthy balanced diet, overwhelmed by the sudden freedom and infinite options I had available for me to eat! After researching for a while, I decided that going vegan was not only the best option for my health, but also for the environment and its inhabitants. I also was enticed by the challenge of making healthy vegan food that even the pickiest members of my friends and family, barely any of whom are even vegetarian, would love.
I draw inspiration from my roots, my travels around the world, and my love of movement and exercise. Whether I’m dancing, hiking, or exploring a new place, I find joy in everything that uplift the body and soul. And speaking of joy, I share my life with my amazing husband (Zen and Zaatar’s biggest fan) and our two beloved cats, Soos (which means black licorice in Arabic) and Skittles - so you could say we really love food around here!
Thank you for stopping by! I hope Zen and Zaatar brings you inspiration, flavor, and a sense of connection to food, health, and culture.
